A needed update

So it's been a couple around a month since I've had the time to spend time on the thing I love doing.

Here's a sci-fi environment.

A study of a John Singer Sargent painting

I enjoyed this, it went smooth and I am pleased with the outcome. I tried to pay attention to the colour values and learned a few things. The lighting Sargent used serves well for portraits as well, over the head but just in front.

Study of rocks

This was quite a challenge in terms of drawing so many individual rocks, manually generating rock textures and actually trying to register the texture formation in my head so I could unlock another part to my yet to be completed visual library =] Next, I'll try some water or rain on surfaces...Really need to get all these surface types down so I can draw them more or less from memory, so I can start to focus on context rather than technical parts to a concept or illustration.

Landscape study

A creature design process

The idea behind this creature design was to incorporate a scorpion, a quadruped such as a horse or lion, but I wanted to establish an overall arthropod look to it.It can climb hard surface terrain with its hard claws and it rears its prey or victims in with its expandable claw jaw.

The initial idea was this:

It then turned into this:

However, I wanted to change the colour to more of a yellow/orange, as it usually resides in cave/mountainous regions, but possibly in jungles.

This is what I came up with, but the proportions and perspective, as well as the overall design displeased me, thus I drew it out again, THIS time I used an outline sketch to make sure everything has believable proportions and the perspective was correct, as well as lay out a proper light source/direction.

I then tampered with the original outline shape a little and established a light source and direction.

Here is the finished piece!

Environments

I branched off a first idea, then just went a bit crazy and produced variants. Number one is the initial idea, then developed to the finals 5 and 6.

I had to think about composition and focus points/areas. This was hard because I didn't plan this piece very much, it would help in the future if I started to plan out perspective, scale and rough ideas with line drawings first, even if it is very loose plans, it would at least help me to make a more convincing piece of art at the end of the day!

Nandos

Turned my friend into a decaying zombie! Maybe the nandos didn't go down too well for him...

Here's a quick environment for the MMO project for University, I wanted to achieve a cartoon-like appearance, similar to Professor Layton's style of art.

University project

I wouldn't normally post university work here, but this is an exception as I drew and designed a world map for a post hand-in project.

These are the initial stage designs:

Below is the developed design, I experimented with different artistic effects in Photoshop to try and get more of a traditional feel.

More experimenting and thinking about presentation:

Made a decision!

Final!

More life drawing

Life drawing

So far I'm keeping up with updating, wahoo. Here's a life drawing of my girlfriend, people asleep are so much more easy to draw than people awake ha. Was quite a struggle in getting things right as I had to keep on tilting my head.

First ever post

So I realised that it is time to get a blog for my art! Expect anything from doodles, personal illustrations to more finished pieces.

Here's an image of mechs I came up with. I wanted to incorporate a loose style with my mark making, and I think I did...But when I spend too long on a piece, I tend to lose that fluidity and expression! Something I need to improve on I think.
